Henry County Office of Emergency Management have confirmed that St. Clair, Henry, and Benton counties will not qualify for a State of Disaster Declaration following the devastating storms that swept through the region on Monday, May 19, 2025.

Late last night, the State of Missouri notified local emergency management agencies that the damage sustained in the area did not meet the criteria necessary for state-level disaster assistance. A key factor in the denial was that a significant portion of the damaged properties, especially in Benton and Henry counties, were identified as second homes or lake houses — which do not qualify to be included in official damage assessments.

“This means our counties will not be eligible for state funding related to cleanup, repairs, or direct financial assistance,” said a spokesperson from the local emergency management office. “While this news is disappointing, it’s not the end of our efforts.”

Since receiving the notification, officials have spent the morning coordinating with area agencies to seek out alternative sources of aid. “We’re actively identifying additional resources, financial assistance programs, and labor support to help our residents recover,” the spokesperson added. “We are very encouraged by the progress we’re making and will continue to share updates with the public throughout the day.”

Despite the setback, local leaders emphasize their commitment to ensuring the community receives all the help it needs. “We are not giving up. Our citizens deserve all the support we can find, and we’re going to keep working to get it.”

Residents are encouraged to stay connected with local emergency management channels for the latest information and available resources.
