Native warm season grasses can provide good forage to graze cows and calves during the summer months. Furthermore, there are good financial incentives to help incorporate native warm season grasses into a forage grazing system. Therefore, MU Extension is collaborating with Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) to provide an educational Native Warm Season Grass Pasture Walk on August 1. The educational workshop will begin at 3:00 p. m. at the Vernon County Fairgrounds Centennial Hall at 1617 East Ashland Street, Nevada, MO 64772. This pasture walk will include a lecture portion at the fairgrounds. The lecture portion will include NRCS Soil Health Specialist Drexel Atkinson, MU Animal Science Associate Teaching Professor Harley Naumann, and MDC Private Lands Conservationist Josh Cussimanio discussing the topics of Cattle grazing management of native warm season grasses, Conversion process of cool season grass pastures to native warm season grass pastures and Benefits of incorporation of native warm season grasses into cattle grazing pastures. Following the lecture portion there will be an evening pasture walk to provide demonstration and further discuss lecture topics. This pasture walk will take place at Prairie View Stock Farm at 2172 South State Hwy WW, Rich Hill, MO 64779. Some of the things that will be outlined in the pasture walk include cattle grazing management of the original prairie and conversion of approximately 220 acres of cool season grass pastures to native warm season grass pastures. Since dinner will be provided at this free event, registration is required to attend. MU+MDC Native grass group will be providing the meal, so in order attend, register online at https://extension.missouri.edu/events/native-warm-season-grass-pasture-walk by July 27.
