The group who honored Memorial Day with the placement of the over 2000 yellow roses at the Appleton City Cemetery thank you for your support. Now it’s time to pick those roses up. Do you want to try your hand at jewelry making, get a painting of you and yours while you wait or let the kids craft and play? All this and more, including food trucks and a local art show, are free for area residents to enjoy 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 2 at the Liston Center, 508 N. Main St., in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. The festivities take place while international street artist ARCY paints LIVE an 8 ft x 12 ft mural of Sally Liston, longtime local educator and namesake of the Liston Center. An artist reception follows at 4:00 p.m. Known for his paint-splashed style, ARCY spray paints live event walls in front of onlookers in cities across the nation. ARCY’s mural will portray a young, turn-of-the-century Sally Liston imagining infinite horizons for herself and all local children. Event hosts West Central Missouri Community Action Agency and New Growth Women’s Business Center operate at the Liston Center. Participating Local Artists and makers signed up to date for demonstrations, activities, and displays include: Vanessa VanBuskirk, Vitrum Jewelry – jewelry and jewelry making, Rhonda Wallen – painting household items (pots, sacks), Dennis Wallen – whittling, Pam Elliott, Danika’s Treasures – pressed flower art, Rachael Daulton, Aidy & Ardy – soap making, photography, Brenda Carrel, Namaste Creations – jewelry, Jennifer Caldwell, Parents as Teachers, kids’ art activities, John Zalzar – wood figures, live paintings, Shelia Benham, artwork and student work, Shelia Benham, artwork and student work and Amber Francis, artwork and student work. 

From 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Saturday June 10, 2023, “The Train Guy”, Mike Offineer, will discuss “The Katy Railroad: History & Heritage” at the historic 1870 MKT Depot on Highway 52, Appleton City, MO.  He will present historical aspects of railroading and share railroad photographs and artifacts, like old lanterns, timetables and how to tie hoop orders.  After 41 years, Mike retired as an MK&T and then Union Pacific locomotive engineer.  Rick Kraus will also be present with two tracks of model railroads. The displays open at 1:00 p.m.

A summer kids event, Stellar VBS, will be hosted at First Baptist Church of AC June 21-24. Stellar is for kids 5 years old through those that have completed 4th grade. They will start with a meal at 5:30 and conclude at 8:30 p.m. each evening. Family members and friends can join in daily at 8:15 p.m. as they wrap up their day. They also invite families to church on Sunday, June 25 for the finale and a meal following services. Free private tennis lessons are offered to anyone at the tennis courts at Donnohue-Dugan Park.  Rackets and balls will be provided.  To set up appointments for your private lessons or if you have questions, call Dennis Dunham at 476-2151 or 476-5514 or Tommy Payton at 816-863-6624. Open tennis is every day 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tennis is exercise that is fun!

The AC Carousel will be open 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday – Sunday through Labor Day. Read the rules/guidelines posted at the Carousel and the old Yoss grocery store on the corner. 

Appleton City Rural Health Clinic will offer free sports physicals in the clinic on the following dates: Wednesday, June 7, Wednesday, June 14 and Wednesday, June 21.  Physicals are by appointment only from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Call the clinic at 660-476-2121 to make your appointment.  

The Appleton City Museum is open every Friday 1:30-4:30 through September 29, as well as the first Saturday of each month from 1:30-3:30. If these times are not convenient, an appointment may be made by calling Patty at 660-598-4151 or Susan 660-476-5579. It is time to renew annual memberships to the Appleton City Museum.  The Museum operates solely on donations, memberships, fundraising lunches and interest from an endowment.  Please consider a new membership or renewal at $15 individual, $25 family or $500 lifetime membership. 

Sign up now for the Summer Reading program. Every Monday in July, the AC Public Library will hold two summer reading groups. Kids 10 and under will be welcome at 11:00 a.m., while those 10 and up can come at 2:00 p.m. that same day for a little more in-depth learning. Parents and guardians can sign up any time during normal business hours between now and June 20, or call the Library at (660) 476-5513 for more information.

The 19th Annual Appleton City Car Show will be July 8 in the City Park, right off 52 Hwy across the street from Zink Motor Company. Check in 8:00 a.m.-noon.  Car Show noon-3:00 p.m. This is a judged event. There is a $10 entry fee, with proceeds going to two $1000 scholarships for local high school students. Top 70 cars and trucks combined, top 3 motorcycles, and top 3 rat rods.
